July 26, 2021 is the Americans with Disabilities Act’s 31st anniversary. In honor of the ADA anniversary, we are donating all profits from our Lead Where You Are book and eBook to The Arc from July 14th-31st.
The Arc is a disability awareness charity. Their mission is to promote and protect the human rights of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. They support individuals with disabilities with a goal of having full inclusion and participation in their communities. The organization works hard to ensure individuals get this full inclusion in their work, community, travel, worship, and every other aspect of their lives. The Arc has been driving change for 69 years and has over 1000 national programs. They offer various ways to get involved: You can visit their website to become a member, become a sponsor, donate, and even open your own chapter.
At Cornerstone Learning we believe in following the C.A.R.E model to achieve success and engaged performance. The Arc does an excellent job in following this model of clarity, alignment, resources, and enabling.
As a charitable organization, it is extremely important to obtain and sustain clarity throughout the organization. They do this by having a clear mission, clearly stated to the employees, volunteers, and donors. This mission, to create and spread awareness of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities to gain and receive fairness within their community, enhances individuals’ reason to believe in this organization. It encourages people to donate, encourages employees to keep working for an incredible and needed purpose, and encourages individuals with disabilities to keep striving for equality.
This organization also shows alignment within their organization. Everyone within this organization is striving for the same goal and everyone knows how to achieve success and why they should help this organization. Because all people (executive, employees, volunteers, and donors) are aligned, wanting this organization to be successful so individuals with disabilities can have equality, The Arc can be successful in its endeavor to spread disability awareness.
The Arc invests in resources to help their organization be successful. They talk to individuals with disabilities and assist them in getting successful careers, they provide fact sheets, and they host webinars. They provide training and educational resources to help encourage and benefit their employees.
The Arc enables top performance within their organization by maintaining a positive and helpful workplace and performance environment, and by following through on their stated strategies of building the movement, speaking truth to anyone who will listen, advocating, extending their reach, and innovating with new and improved programs. Ultimately, The Arc promotes equality, fairness, and inclusion within their teams, chapters, and webinars.
Thank you to all who purchase Lead Where You Are and donate to The Arc, building a community for all!

What Do You Need to Succeed in 2019?
What do you need to succeed in 2019?
Is it more time dedicated to professional development? Training? Enabling technology? A coach or mentor? Look, performance success is nearly always dependent on additional resources beyond our personal capabilities for change. However, both individuals and even engagement teams we work with often look to engage resources they think they need without gaining clarity and alignment to the success they want to achieve.
If you have been working with us using the CARE framework for your performance success over the past couple weeks, by now you should have a clear line of sight to your personal path to 2019 success and your actions and activities should be in alignment with your organization, team, and peers. With clarity and alignment achieved we can now identify resources that will contribute to your success.
Your resources can include but are not limited to people, processes, technology, training, coaching, mentoring, really anything you need to assist you in achieving success in 2019. Make a list of all potential resources you feel you will need. As you determine your resources, ask these three questions to ensure they are resources that will make a positive contribution, not detract or become wasted.
• Why is this resource important to your success?
• How and when will I use this resource?
• How will I measure the impact of this resource?
If you can clearly articulate the answers to these questions then your resources stand a very good possibility of contributing to your success. Next week we tie everything together with enablement actions.
So, I will ask again, what do you need to succeed in 2019?

Aligning Your Personal Vision for Success
Goooooooal!!!!!! To achieve success in soccer the foot, leg, body, head, eyes and mind must all be aligned to score a goal. To achieve personal goal success in business, your actions, activities, behaviors, and priorities must be aligned with your organization, team and peer’s actions, activities and priorities. Misaligned goals are one of the top contributors to employee disengagement, confusion, frustration, and wasted time, leading to a major loss of productivity.
Step two in your CARE model for performance success is to ensure you align your personal vision for success, enhanced role clarity and the priorities you identified in the gaining clarity phase to the stated organizational goals, your managers vision for team success and those peers where you mutually contribute to each other’s success.
Once a plan is created and aligned, set monthly or bi-monthly alignment sessions (30 minutes or less) with your leader, your internal and external customers and key contributing peers. At the end of those sessions you should walk away mutually aligned on what success looks like, what your contribution will be for the month(s), and any barriers that might exist - with a plan to overcome them.
Gaining and cultivating ongoing goal alignment is a major factor in contributing to personal goal success and enhanced overall employee engagement and connection. Next week is all about the resources.

Establishing and Ensuring Continual Performance Clarity
This year, don’t set goals just to check an organizational box. Create a clear, aligned and agile personal performance plan that guides and delivers 2019 personal performance success.
In these dynamic and often unpredictable business cycles the SMART goal setting process of the past can be limiting and difficult to manage specific, time-bound targets when business models are disrupted, customer expectations/demands constantly shift and technology changes our world at any given time.
To thrive in these times, we are sharing with you a personal and organizational planning process we use with clients that provides clarity, alignment, resources and continually adjusts and enables performance success, no matter the prevailing performance environment. We call it CARE.
In this blog we will highlight the C (Clarity), establishing and ensuring continual performance clarity.
It is important to establish a clear foundation and vision for personal performance success. Start with clarifying the following:
Organization, team and personal performance success for 2019
Role definition - Ask Human Resources for a copy of your job description. Take the time to update it, if necessary, to ensure you are clear on what the organization expects from the role you are performing.
Key Actions
Priorities
Once you have initial clarity, it is imperative you continually define success and communicate with others the progress towards that success you are achieving and any barriers you encounter as the performance dynamics evolve. Gaining and providing clarity is an ongoing process.
Next week aligning your path to success with your organization, your leader, your team and your peers.

Creating Your Personal C.A.R.E. Goals for 2019
The start to each new year brings with it a new beginning, new enthusiasm and often a new vision for success. There is a clean slate provided when that clock strikes 12 AM January 1st. So no matter how successful or difficult the last year might have been the coming year is full of hope and promise.
To take full advantage of this clean slate, now is the time to plan what and how success will be achieved this year. Many of us have used SMART goals throughout the years to plan success. It is generally accepted that the SMART acronym was first written down in November 1981 in Spokane, Washington by George T. Doran, a consultant and former Director of Corporate Planning for Washington Water Power Company. According to this process, goals need to be Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time-Bound.
While it is difficult to argue with this process that has served many of us well for over 30 years, it does miss some very important planning elements required to navigate the complexity and the rapid change each of us faces in 2019 (and beyond). Over the next month we will work with you to elevate your SMART goals. We highlight a model for performance success we use in our individual and organizational coaching – CARE.
Over the next few weeks will provide insights, tools and examples for you to create your personal CARE model for 2019 success. At the end of the series you will have developed a plan for success that builds in flexibility, accountability, alignment and enablement. So here is to new beginnings and a clean slate for 2019. It will be a tremendous year!
