Destination: Success | 3-D Performance Planning
Most individual performance discussions typically focus on enhancing one key dimension, eligibility. These are your technical talents and recent accomplishments. An individual’s eligibility is extremely important, however, the discussion is missing two other critical development areas: suitability and viability. In this third part of our Leading Performance blog series, we challenge you to take a more wholistic, 3-D view of your past and future performance so your development plan can be more focused and impactful.
Download our PDF on eligibility, suitability, and viability, the framework for leading performance.

Destination: Success | Awareness = Responsibility
In leading our personal performance, if we seek or are “made aware" of development/growth opportunities it should motivate us to take personal responsibility to act, to do something: leverage a strength, change a behavior, enhance a skill, or learn something new. In our continuing Leading Performance blog series, we are sharing a high-level look at the 3 awareness’s we create with our coaching clients.
We start with enhancing a participant’s organizational awareness.
As you gain greater organizational awareness, take time to assess how situationally aware you might be. Each of us responds differently to both good and negative situations. It is important in your personal performance development to acknowledge and understand the impact your natural actions and reactions (both positive and negative) have on situational outcomes.
And finally, the more self-aware you are of your own natural strengths and areas for personal development the more you can impact your personal performance results. List key technical and professional traits and attributes you possess.
Take responsibility today to gain greater organizational, situational, and self-awareness and turn that awareness into a dynamic personal plan for growth and development.

Destination: Success | Leading Personal Performance
The future of personal performance development is here.
The traditional performance management process of annual personal goal setting, followed by mid-year and end of year performance reviews delivered by managers is evolving. We are seeing a rapid emergence of near real-time, ongoing, individual performance planning and feedback, supported by a host of enabling technology to assist in that feedback process.
This evolution is a welcomed change to a decades old performance management process that supported a more command and control performance environment where a manager’s job was to manage their people’s actions and activities then evaluate performance and results and deliver a performance review at the end of the year. Unfortunately, this model produced more of a “check the box” activity that had to be completed by a deadline than meaningful performance planning, growth, and development.
Even if your organization has not participated in this evolution yet, it is coming, and you can personally prepare for the future by proactively engaging in leading your personal performance development process and activities today so when that transformation does arrive, you are already leading where you are. Over the next four weeks we will begin to move from just reviewing performance to you and your leader working continuously on pursing performance. From having expectations set for you to you proactively setting and aligning expectations with your manager in support of their vision and mission for your organization. And finally, how to cultivate and lead ongoing, 15-20-minute performance connections that ensure you continually meet and exceed the mutually agreed upon expectations with your manager.
We will provide valuable insights and tools to assist you in leading and pursuing performance, preparing you for the next generation in performance development.
We want to help enable personal performance success.

A Truly Great Leader
Today, we honor and pay tribute to Martin Luther King, a timeless leader who, even today, is a role model for our next generation of leaders. If you truly look at it, MLK exemplifies all the traits and characteristics that we need in leading today’s very complex and difficult world.
Inspires
He inspires other to action. Martin Luther King didn’t have a “I Have a Plan Speech”. No, he had a “I Have a Dream Speech” that touched, energized, and mobilized millions, even in a world without social media.
Energized
Dr. King energized his followers by connecting with them, not communicating to them. Even today, I don't believe we would see him using Twitter or Facebook as his main source of connection. He would invest the time to go into the communities, churches, and homes to directly and authentically connect with them. Meet them where they are and understand who they are, all of which creates energy and personal commitment.
Facilitated
MLK facilitated a movement and social change, he didn’t control it or direct it. He was there to enable it and facilitate the actions and activities required through others. He didn’t demand people comply with him, he engaged them and supported their efforts, he didn’t micromanage them.
Developed
And finally, Dr. King developed others and cultivated the right environment to lead the change he so vividly saw and desperately wanted. He knew he couldn’t do it alone, so he invested time, poured into, coached, and mentored those leadership skills and character traits he naturally exhibited.
Today, we honor and pay tribute to Martin Luther King, a leader we hold up each day to so many as a true role model leader for yesterday, today, and tomorrow.

Looking Forward
It is December 3, 2018, another year has just passed and you are looking forward to the holiday season, 2019, and all that it will bring.
But you are reflecting back on 2018 and what kind of year you had:
- What did you accomplish, both personally and professionally?
- Did you proactively set performance expectations with your manager and follow up each month with setting performance connection time (15-20 minutes) where you led the performance discussion on how well you are meeting those expectations?
- What kind of positive impact did you have and what obstacles did you face and overcome?
- Where did you personally grow and what behaviors did you focus on changing or developing? For example – less defensiveness, more flexibility in your communication style, better collaborator, showing more empathy.
- Did you step up and lead where you are with greater personally accountability? Did you make things happen or just let things happen?
- Where did you lead change and think more disruptively while not acting disruptively?
The good news it is only January 9, 2018 and you have the entire year to be the person you just thought about.
It’s not about goals and resolutions, it's about impact and results. Don’t make goals, make things happen. Beginning with the end in mind, you have the foundation for a tremendous 2018.
It’s your performance, your career, in your control!
Lead where you are, no matter where you are in 2018.

Leadership is Evolving, Are You?
Over the last six weeks we have explored the critical shifts occurring in leadership.
I challenge each of you to start with just one of the shifts above and put a 90-day plan in place to grow and develop your personal leadership in that area. For instance, if you feel too much of your day is task driven and you are just drifting from one day to the next, put a plan together to find purpose in what you do and connect to it. If you lack clarity in your role or organization, seek information, ask questions, and move from fiction to the truth. You will see how clarity and alignment energizes you and those around you.
Clarity and alignment energizes you and those around you.
LeaderShift is real and happening around each of us. Embrace it, own it, and lead it. I promise it will make a difference in you and your organization. For more information and to order LeaderShift for you and your team please click here.
All the best on your personal LeaderShift journey.
