Destination: Success | 3-D Performance Planning
Most individual performance discussions typically focus on enhancing one key dimension, eligibility. These are your technical talents and recent accomplishments. An individual’s eligibility is extremely important, however, the discussion is missing two other critical development areas: suitability and viability. In this third part of our Leading Performance blog series, we challenge you to take a more wholistic, 3-D view of your past and future performance so your development plan can be more focused and impactful.

Destination: Success | Awareness = Responsibility
In leading our personal performance, if we seek or are “made aware" of development/growth opportunities it should motivate us to take personal responsibility to act, to do something: leverage a strength, change a behavior, enhance a skill, or learn something new. In our continuing Leading Performance blog series, we are sharing a high-level look at the 3 awareness’s we create with our coaching clients.
We start with enhancing a participant’s organizational awareness.
As you gain greater organizational awareness, take time to assess how situationally aware you might be. Each of us responds differently to both good and negative situations. It is important in your personal performance development to acknowledge and understand the impact your natural actions and reactions (both positive and negative) have on situational outcomes.
And finally, the more self-aware you are of your own natural strengths and areas for personal development the more you can impact your personal performance results. List key technical and professional traits and attributes you possess.
Take responsibility today to gain greater organizational, situational, and self-awareness and turn that awareness into a dynamic personal plan for growth and development.

Destination: Success | Leading Personal Performance
The future of personal performance development is here.
The traditional performance management process of annual personal goal setting, followed by mid-year and end of year performance reviews delivered by managers is evolving. We are seeing a rapid emergence of near real-time, ongoing, individual performance planning and feedback, supported by a host of enabling technology to assist in that feedback process.
This evolution is a welcomed change to a decades old performance management process that supported a more command and control performance environment where a manager’s job was to manage their people’s actions and activities then evaluate performance and results and deliver a performance review at the end of the year. Unfortunately, this model produced more of a “check the box” activity that had to be completed by a deadline than meaningful performance planning, growth, and development.
Even if your organization has not participated in this evolution yet, it is coming, and you can personally prepare for the future by proactively engaging in leading your personal performance development process and activities today so when that transformation does arrive, you are already leading where you are. Over the next four weeks we will begin to move from just reviewing performance to you and your leader working continuously on pursing performance. From having expectations set for you to you proactively setting and aligning expectations with your manager in support of their vision and mission for your organization. And finally, how to cultivate and lead ongoing, 15-20-minute performance connections that ensure you continually meet and exceed the mutually agreed upon expectations with your manager.
We will provide valuable insights and tools to assist you in leading and pursuing performance, preparing you for the next generation in performance development.
We want to help enable personal performance success.

Destination: Success | Act With Urgency
Compliancy is a near death experience for leading change!
To lead change, you see possibilities in everything, think disruptively about those possibilities, turn possibility into options, and now you must act with urgency! Don’t wait to lead your change, act now and get started on making your change options happen. Use our CARE framework to act. Start with C which is clarity. Are you clear on what success looks like in your change effort? Do you have alignment, the A in our framework? Are you aligned with others, having a mutual definition of success?
Do you have resources (the R), or a plan to gain the resources, to achieve change success? And finally, how are you going to enable your change success (that's the E). Look to measure, reward/recognize, and provide ongoing reinforcement that enables change success for the long term.
As you can see, there is lot to do! Don’t let complacency or the whirlwind of your organization lessen your potential to lead impactful change right where you are. Go get started!
“Without change there is no innovation, creativity, or incentive for improvement. Those who initiate change will have a better opportunity to manage the change that is inevitable.”
Next week...Don't stop!

Destination: Success | A Man on the Moon
An engaged team put a man on the moon!
There is a predictable model for team success leading to amazing results. Let's explore the formula for success one team used to literally put a man on the moon.
When President John F. Kennedy first announced that America was going to send a man to the moon, most thought that it was impossible and insane and predictably asked, "Why?". But alas, we know (or most of us know) that he did it!
The formula for success President Kennedy used?
Purpose + Behavior + Commitment + Support = Amazing Things
First have a purpose. It must be compelling, relevant, and go beyond just performing or completing a task. The purpose established by JFK – “Put a man on the moon and return safely by the end of the decade”. Now that was a clear and compelling purpose.
The second element of the formula for team success – behavior. To enable success, a team must identify and consistently display enabling team behaviors. For the Apollo team, they didn’t focus on obstacles, they focused on opportunity. It was about the mission and not personal gain. They worked as one to achieve the purpose and never lost sight of what was truly important. That team had the right behaviors.
The mission required the third element of the success formula; commitment. Not just commitment from the three astronauts who risked their lives, and as a result, became national hero’s either. No, it was the thousands of NASA employees dedicating their lives to the purpose. Even when tragedy struck the program in 1967 and three astronauts lost their lives on the launch pad, commitment to the purpose never wavered. In fact, that incident rallied NASA to ensure that the sacrifice of human lives would not be in vain. It takes real commitment to ensure team success.
And finally, it takes support to succeed. President Kennedy made an appeal to both Congress and the American people on May 25, 1961. “I believe this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal before this decade is out; of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to Earth”. The men and women of NASA had the support of the President and now an entire nation.
Because the team had a compelling purpose, showed the right behaviors, were committed to success, and had the support it needed, on July 20, 1969 at 10:56 PM Astronaut Neil Armstrong stepped off the lunar module ladder and planted his foot on the powdery surface. Then on July 24, 1969 the space capsule safely splashed down, completing Apollo 11’s mission and realizing the dreams of a nation.

Destination: Success | Decline Your invitation to the Island of Negativity
The dreaded Island of Negativity is where negative people go to thrive and attempt to expand their island’s territorial boundaries by recruiting negative converts to join them. These are the negative ones where things are always happening to them. They are the victims. They have made making excuses, placing blame, and justifying failure a core competency. You frequently hear from them, “It can’t be done.”, “That will never work.”, “It’s not my fault.”, and “That is just the way it is around here, nothing changes.”. Unfortunately, they can be found everywhere and can be relentless in their pursuit...if we let them.
As we know, negativity is one of the greatest detours on the journey to success. Don’t accept the invitation. Stay focused on making things happen, no matter what.
Control what you can control, influence what you can’t, and when you can’t control or influence something, move on.
When approached with the invitation to venture to the Island of Negativity, try these responses:
“No, I really don’t want to go there. Things may not be perfect and there are issues, but what can we do to make them better?”
“How I can I help?”
“What options do we have, and what can we do to reframe our focus to make a difference?”
“We need to positively engage with action, not talk. We can’t just let things drift.”
You know, the more people that decline their invitation to join the Island of Negativity the smaller the island gets and the lonelier the remaining inhabitants become. At some point they will be faced with the decision of having to leave the Island of Negativity behind or staying and becoming more and more isolated, ultimately becoming irrelevant and having to leave to find another organization where they can island build once more.
Today, lead where you are, don’t let negativity detour your destination: Success.
